Walker and Powell earn 2009 season bests in Monte Carlo...

MONTE CARLO, Monaco--Current American pole vault record holder Brad Walker of Mountlake Terrace cleared a 2009 seasonal best of 5.80 meters/19 feet 0.25 inches in finishing second to France's Renaud Lavillenie at the Herculis Meeting Tuesday.

Lavillenie, the current world leader in the event this season at 19-8 1/2 (6.01m), won with a jump of 19-3 1/2 (5.88m) to defeat Walker, the reigning world champion in the event and University of Washington graduate.

Walker began the competition with a first attempt clearance at 18-4 1/2 (5.60m), then needed two attempts to clear 18-8 1/4 (5.70m), then made 19-0.25 on his first attempt, then passed the eventual winning height of 19-3 1/2 to try and clear 19-6 1/4 (5.95).

Rainier Beach High School graduate Ginnie Powell finished fifth in the women's 100 meter hurdles, running a time of 12.70, a 2009 seasonal best.
