Norris Frederick jumps in Joensuu Wednesday, plus a link on Daegu...

JOENSUU, Finland--Former University of Washington standout Norris Frederick competes in the long jump Wednesday in the Joensuu Games, a EAA Area Permit Meet, and part of the Finnish Elite Games series.

Frederick competes against a field that includes South Africa's Luvo Manyonga, the 2010 IAAF world junior champion in this event, and Tommi Evilä, who was the 2005 bronze medalist in the long jump at the IAAF world championships in Helsinki.

Manyonga won the long jump Sunday at the Savo Games in Lapinlahti, while Frederick was fourth.

The start list for the Joensuu Games is available here.  Oregon Duck fans may note that Zoe Buckman is entered in the 1500m, while Rachel Yurkovich will contest the javelin.

With over four weeks to go, we will start posting a series of links to help you get ready for the IAAF World Track & Field Championships in Daegu (photo of Daegu Stadium courtesy Daegu Organizing Committee).

Today's link is from the Korea JoongAng Daily about Daegu's preparation for next month's world championships, considered one of the four major world sporting events after the Summer Olympics, Winter Olympics, and the FIFA World Cup.

“This will be a turning point for Daegu’s development,” Cho Hae-nyoung, head of the organizing committee, said last month. “It is the best and biggest event in the city’s history.”
