Washington State University alum Bernard Lagat (left/photo by Paul Merca) is on the start list in the men’s 5000 meters for Thursday’s Weltklasse meeting in Zürich, Switzerland, which is the penultimate meet of the 14-meet IAAF Diamond League series.

Lagat will face a field that includes US Olympic teammates Paul Chelimo, the silver medalist in Rio, and former Puyallup and Emerald Ridge HS standout Hassan Mead, who was 12th.

Olympic bronze medalist Hagos Gebrhiwet of Ethiopia, 4th place finisher Mo Ahmed of Canada, and 7th place finisher Albert Rop of Burundi are also in the Zürich field, along with Muktar Edris of Ethiopia, who originally finished fourth before being disqualified for stepping on the inside of the track.

Olympic steeplechase silver medalist Evan Jager of the Portland-based Bowerman Track Club and his teammate Ryan Hill, who did not make the US Olympic team in the 5000, are also entered in the race.

After Thursday’s race in Zürich, Lagat is scheduled to run the 3000 at Saturday’s ISTAF meeting in Berlin.
