Running in the first of two semifinals, Windle was in fourth for the first three laps of the race before he made his customary charge over the last 200 meters.

Heat winner Alvaro De Arriba of Spain had the same thought as Windle, as he was in last before roaring from behind on the last lap to win in 1:45.44.

Great Britain’s Elliot Giles got the second automatic qualifying spot in 1:45.46, with Windle third in an indoor personal best 1:45.52.
