Sam Prakel sets new personal best in 1500m at Paavo Nurmi Games...


In Turku, Finland, Seattle resident Sam Prakel (Paul Merca file photo) finished third in a personal best in the men's 1500 at the Paavo Nurmi Games Wednesday night.

The Paavo Nurmi Games is part of World Athletics' Continental Tour series, as a Gold event.

Prakel worked his way through the middle of the pack, and got himself in a position to attack the leaders, but ran out of real estate over the last 100 meters.

Mohamed Attaoui of Spain took the victory in a personal best 3:31.82, followed by Ruben Verheyden of Belgium in 3:32.71, then Prakel in 3:32.76, breaking his old personal best of 3:33.08, set last year at the USA championships.

Washington alum Aaron Ahl finished fifth in the men's 3000 steeplechase, in a season best tine of 8:17.22. Mohammed Tindoufti of Morocco won in 8:11.52.

UW alums Kieran Lumb and Brian Fay finished fifth and seventh in the men's 5000.

Lumb, who has been based in Norway for almost a year after leaving UW coach Andy Powell's pro group, ran a season best 13:19.68, while Fay ran 13:23.11.

Florian Bremm of Germany won the race in a personal best 12:56.80.

2025 Washington grad Amina Maatoug was twelfth in the women's 1500 in 4:14.51. Canada's Gabriela DeBues-Stafford won in 4:04.40.


WOODRUFF IN ROME DIAMOND LEAGUE 400H THURSDAY NIGHT...

Washington alum Gianna Woodruff, who finished fourth in Sunday's Meeting International Mohammed VI de Rabat, the third stop on the Wanda Diamond League tour, is on the start list for Thursday night's Pietro Mennea Golden Gala meet in Rome.

In Rabat, Woodruff made her season debut over the full 400 hurdles, running 54.08, after running a 300 hurdles race on May 8th in 38.30 at the Arkansas Twilight meet in her home training base in Fayetteville, Arkansas. 

She'll face many of the same women who raced in Rabat, including Slovakia's Emma Zapletalová, who won in a world leading time and Slovakian national record 52.82. 

Also in the field is Americans Anna Cockrell and Dalilah Muhammad, as well as Norway's Amalie Iuel, and Jamaica's Rushell Clayton.

Flotrack ($) will stream the meet starting at 10:15 am Pacific.
