THE RECAP: All nine Washington D1 & D2 schools in action outdoors over the weekend...
Apologies for the delay in posting the weekend recap, as I was heavily involved with the meet production of the Willie Williams Classic in Tucson (as some of the loyal readers know, I am the meet announcer for the University of Arizona during the spring).
Anyway, here's a recap of what happened over the weekend, courtesy of the various sports information offices, as all nine of Washington's Division I & II schools had athletes competing.
WILLIE WILLIAMS CLASSIC
Thanks to a private donor from Central Washington University, a small group of athletes made the trip from Ellensburg to compete for the first time at the Willie Williams Classic at Drachman Stadium in Tucson, hosted by the University of Arizona.Austin Albertin (Arizona Athletics photo) and McCall DeChenne of the Wildcats, the reigning GNAC champion in the 400 hurdles, each placed second overall in that event.
Albertin ran a personal best 53.62 to finish behind Arizona's NCAA relay scorer Calvin Wilson, who ran 51.43. Albertin also ran 48.83 in the 400, which leads the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.
DeChenne ran a personal best 61.60 and pressed defending Western Athletic Conference champion Terice Steen through eight hurdles, before Steen took the win in 61.16.
In the process, DeChenne posted the second fastest time in NCAA Division II so far this season.
DeChenne also finished 7th in the 400, running 56.97, and ran 17.69 in the 100 hurdles.
Aiden Wise found himself a pair of lifetime personal bests as well, finishing the men's 110 hurdles with a final time of 15.23 seconds, and the 400H in 56.93.

BALDY CASTILLO INVITATIONAL
In Tempe, Micaela De Mello of Washington State broke the school record in the 100 hurdles at the Baldy Castillo Invitational hosted by Arizona State University.
De Mello, a freshman from Brazil, ran 13.08 to obliterate the previous school record of 13.25 set by Beijing heptathlon Olympian Diana Pickler in 2007. In the process De Mello beat Texas A&M's NCAA qualifier Kaylah Robinson by .01, and recorded the fourth fastest time in the world so far this season, as well as the early season collegiate leading mark.
Sophomore Caroline Jerotich won the women's 3,000m steeplechase at the Baldy Castillo Invitational in 10:27.85. It is the fastest 3,000m steeplechase time in NCAA Division I this season and the eighth fastest time recorded in the event in program history.
Mitch Jacobson captured a first-place finish in the men's high jump, clearing 7-0.5 (2.15m). It is the second-best mark in the outdoor high jump in NCAA Division I this season.
Results of the Baldy Castillo Invitational are available here, while Washington State's recap is available here.
SAM ADAMS CLASSIC
In Spokane, Eastern Washington, Washington State and Gonzaga all had athletes competing at the Sam Adams Classic hosted by Whitworth University Saturday.
The Eagles picked up ten wins on the day, despite the hail, rain, and cool temperatures, as the men's and women's squads split the victories, earning five each.
Gonzaga earned seven wins on the day, led by Elisabeth Danis in the 3000 (9:47.12), and a double victory by Jillian Greene in the 1500 (4:35.37) and 800 (2:16.95).
The best mark of the day was by US Olympic Trials qualifier Brock Eager, who won the men's hammer with a throw of 226-11 (69.16m).
Results of the Sam Adams Classic is available here.
DORIS HERITAGE TRACK FESTIVAL
In Seattle, all four Great Northwest Athletic Conference schools plus a small contingent from the University of Washington competed at the Doris Heritage Track Festival, hosted by Seattle Pacific, at West Seattle Stadium.
The host school won seven events, while Western Washington won six events, and the University of Washington won four events.
Best marks of the day came from Washington's Jonathan Birchman, who ran 52.04 to win the 400 hurdles; Vanessa Aniteye of Seattle Pacific, who won in 2:11.16; and the Huskies' NCAA heptathlon scorer Ida Eikeng, who won the javelin at 158-8 (48.36m).

OREGON STATE PNW INVITATIONAL
In Corvallis, Seattle University's Isaiah Payne showed off his speed, earning first overall in the 100m and 200m as well as setting a new school record in the 200m.
Payne won the 200 in 21.47, and also won the 100 in 10.65.
Defending Western Athletic Conference javelin champion Nicole Whittern was third overall in her specialty, rifling the spear 143-1 (43.62m).
"I am really proud of our performances across all events," said SeattleU head coach Kelly Sullivan. "One of our best opening meets, especially coming off finals week and dealing with the high winds today. The team we brought competed really hard and left Corvallis excited about the rest of season."
Seattle University's release is available here, while the results of the meet are available here.
