WEEKEND RECAP: Lagat takes third in ISTAF 5000m race in Berlin, plus NCAA D2 harrier action...
BERLIN, Germany—Washington State University alum Bernard Lagat (left/photo by Paul Merca) finished third in the men’s 5000 meter run at the ISTAF Berlin World Challenges Meeting Sunday at the Olympiastadion.
The 40-year old Lagat, who for the past several years, has maintained his summer training base in Tubigen, Germany, ran 13:17.58, as Kenya’s Paul Koech won in 13:08.86. Minnesota alum Hassan Mead of the Oregon TC Elite finished second in 13:10.38.
Rainier Beach HS grad Ginnie Crawford was seventh in the 100 meter hurdles, running 13.42, as Dawn Harper Nelson won in 12.82.
In Fairbanks, Alaska on Saturday, Anna Patti of Seattle Pacific repeated her victory two days earlier by winning the Alaska Invitational Short Course race at the West Ridge Ski Trails.
Patti ran 18:35 over the 5k course, 27 seconds ahead of runner-up and Falcon teammate Sarah Macdonald.
Also scoring for the Falcons were Jessica Rawlins in fourth (19:18), Hannah Calvert in fifth (19:35), and Mary Charleston in sixth (19:37).
The Falcons won with a low score of 18 over Alaska-Fairbanks (46) and Montana State-Billings (69).
In the men’s competition, Ben Halladay was the Falcons’ top runner in seventh, crossing the line in 16:28, as Robert Peterson of Montana State-Billings won in 15:45 over 5k.
The Falcons finished third wit 73 points, with Alaska-Fairbanks winning the team title with 26, and Montana State-Billings second at 35.
In Tacoma, Larissa Kolasinski of Saint Martin’s won the women’s 6k race to lead the Saints to the team title at the University of Puget Sound invitational meet at Fort Steilacoom State Park.
The freshman ran 23:10 to beat UPS senior Taili Ni by eight seconds.
The Saints won the team title with 37, defeating Pacific Lutheran by 8 points, with host Puget Sound third with 49 points.
Tyler Shipley of Puget Sound won the men’s 8k race, running 26:09 to beat teammate Germ Lizier-Zmudzinski by two seconds to lead the Loggers to the team title.
UPS scored 33 points to outdistance PLU (51) and Saint Martin’s (57).
Seattle Pacific, Saint Martin’s, and Pacific Lutheran will all compete at the Sundodger Invitational on September 19th hosted by the University of Washington at Lincoln Park.
