With the indoor track and field season slowly winding down, the European Indoor championships get underway Friday in Glasgow, Scotland at the Emirates Arena,
Former Washington State volunteer assistant coach and University of Idaho alum Liga Velvere (left/photo by Paul Merca) of Latvia kicks things off in the qualifying round of the women’s 800 meters at 11:10 am local time (3:10 am in Seattle), where she will need to place in the top 2 or be one of the four fastest time qualifiers to advance to Saturday’s semis at 6 06 pm local time (10:06 am in Seattle) from the four qualifying heats.
The finals of the women’s 800 are Sunday at 7:18 pm local time (11:18 am in Seattle).
Velvere goes into the European championships with the fifth fastest time at 2:01.10.
Also Friday, Georgetown alum and current University of Washington volunteer assistant coach Amos Bartelsmeyer will run in the men’s 3000 meter qualifying round at 1:20 pm local time (5:20 am in Seattle), where he’ll need to finish in the top four in his heat or be one of the four fastest time qualifiers from the two qualifying heats to advance to Saturday’s final at 7:47 pm local time (11:47 am in Seattle).
Bartelsmeyer, who has dual citizenship, is representing Germany, where he was born before moving with his family to the USA at age 2.
Saturday, Great Britain’s Tim Duckworth, who is training in Seattle under University of Washington associate head coach Toby Stevenson, begins two days of competition in the heptathlon, starting with the 60 meter dash at 10 am local time (2 am in Seattle).
The two day heptathlon concludes with the 1000 meter run on Sunday at 7:37 pm local time (11:37 am in Seattle).
