Don’t look now, but the 2020 collegiate indoor track and field season opens Friday and Saturday, as Eastern Washington University hosts the Candy Cane XII meet at Jim Thorpe Fieldhouse on the EWU campus.
Friday’s schedule consists of the women’s pentathlon and the first four events of the men’s heptathlon, starting at noon.
In addition, there will be preliminary heats in the 55 meter dash and hurdles, as well as field event finals in the men’s and women’s weight throws, women’s pole vault, men’s high jump, and men’s and women’s long jumps.
The men’s long jump is expected to feature the Eagles’ Keshun McGee, who was an NCAA outdoor championships qualifier in 2019 in both the long and triple jumps.
Central Washington NCAA 400 hurdles qualifier Sidney Trinidad (above/photo courtesy CWU Athletics) will go in the pentathlon, along with freshman McCall DeChenne from Ephrata, who was a state champ in the 100 hurdles.
The Wildcats will enter senior Erykah Weems in the 55 hurdles. Weems was an NCAA D2 qualifier last season in the women's 400 hurdles.
On the men’s side, the Wildcats will have transfer Luke Simonson from Spokane CC in the heptathlon. Central is redshirting All-American Braydon Maier, who was seventh in the NCAA decathlon last spring.
Western Washington is expected to send a few athletes to Cheney.
The main portion of the Candy Cane XII will be contested on Saturday starting at 8:30am with the heptathlon 55 hurdles, with the first field event starting at 9:30am.
A limited number of races will be contested, with the longest distance being the women’s 1000 at 1:15pm.
