Eastern's Rebecca Thareek wins pentathlon at Candy Cane XII...
CHENEY—Eastern Washington University sophomore Rebecca Thareek (above/photo courtesy EWU Athletics) recorded the fourth-best indoor pentathlon score in school history in a winning effort to highlight the first day of the Candy Cane XII Indoor Track and Field Meet on Friday (Dec. 6) at Thorpe Fieldhouse.
Thareek scored 3,410 points, ranking fourth all-time at EWU behind a trio of marks set by seniors, including the school record of 3,532 set by Dominque Butler last year.
Thareek had the top high jump Friday of 5-5 (1.65m) to score 795 points, and the third-best long jump with a mark of 17-10 3/4 (5.45m). Her time of 8.78 in the 55-meter hurdles gave her 820 points. She also threw 29-6.75 (9.01m) i the shot put, and ran the 800 in 2:34.0h.
Central Washington’s Sidney Trinidad finished second with a five-event score of 3263 points, just short of the NCAA Division II provisional score of 3277 points.
Trinidad, an NCAA qualifier outdoors in the 400 hurdles, won the 55 hurdles in 8.46, cleared 4-7.5 (1.41m) in the high jump, threw the shot 26-2.75 (7.99m), long jumped 16-9.25 (5.11m), and ran 2:17.1h in the 800.
Rae Patzke was third with 3242 points, followed by Madelyn Knight of Eastern Washington with 3173, then Aliyah Dawkins of Western Washington at 3073, with Eastern’s Margaret Nelson sixth at 3066.
In the men’s heptathlon, Grant Shurtliff, who attends Eastern Washington, but is listed as an unattached competitor, leads after four events with a score of 2942 points.
Race Treat is in second at 2761, followed by Eastern’s Aaron Pullin with 2681, and Quintin Porterfield of the Eagles fourth at 2641.
The last three events of the heptathlon will be contested Saturday, plus the remaining individual events.
