Eastern's Maggie Nelson sets school record & places fifth in WSU Invitational pentathlon...

SPOKANE--Eastern Washington's Maggie Nelson (Paul Merca photo) finished fifth in the pentathlon as competition opened in the WSU Invitational at The Podium in downtown Spokane Thursday afternoon.

Nelson scored a personal best 3604 points, bettering the mark she set at the Candy Cane Invitational in Cheney in December, and eclipsed the school record of 3597 set by Dominique Butler in 2019.

The senior from Spangle, Washington started off with a personal best in the 60 hurdles, running 9.71, then tied her personal best in the high jump by clearing 5-2.5 (1.59m).

Nelson won the shot put competition with another personal best, throwing 41-9.25 (12.73m), then missed her personal best in the long jump by two centimeters, finishing with a mark of 18-0.25 (5.49m).

She then ran a personal best of 2:28.85 in the 800, beating her previous best by nearly five seconds.

With that mark, Nelson moves up one spot on the Big Sky performance list to second, 74 points behind conference leader Ashley Sturgis of Idaho State.

Washington State's Peyton Teevens finished eighth with 3475, highlighted by a win in the 800, running 2:18.63. Cougar teammate Jasneet Nijjar was 12th with a five event score of 3345 points, with her two best events on the day a 9.00 performance in the 60 hurdles, and a 2:20.19 time in the 800.

McCall DeChenne of Central Washington was 16th with 3129 points, while teammate Sarah Sewell was 17th with 2934 points.

Avery McMullen of Colorado was the overall winner with 4231 points, a mark that is currently third in NCAA Division I. McMullen won three events--the 60 hurdles in 8.38, the high jump at 5-9.75 (1.77m), and the long jump at 19-9 (6.02m).

In the men's heptathlon, TJ Davis of Eastern Oregon is the current leader after four events with 2900 points, after winning the shot put and the high jump.

Washington State's Cody Teevens stands sixth at the break with 2609 points, with solid performances in the 60 (7.23), long jump (21-0/6.40m), and high jump (6-0.5/1.84m).

The WSU Invitational resumes Friday at 11 am with the heptathlon 60 hurdles at 11 am, followed by the pole vault at 11:45, then finishing off with the 1000 meters at 3 pm.

Other Invitational events contested Friday night are the women's and men's 5000 at 7 pm, and the distance medley relays at 8:30 and 8:45 pm.

The WSU Open begins at 9 am with the men's high jump and women's weight throw, while the first running events are at 11 am with the 60 hurdles heats.
