BOZEMAN, Montana--Championship week got underway Wednesday at the Big Sky Conference title meet, as the combined events completed its first day of competition with a dusting of snow on the track.
Eastern Washington's Cody Teevens (EWU Athletics photo) stands third in the decathlon after the first five events of the two-day competition with a score of 3289 points, while teammate Colin Hughes is eighth at the break with 2444 points.
Teevens started the day by winning the 100 meters in 11.07, then maintained the lead with a second place finish in the long jump, with a leap of 21-5.25 (6.53m).
In the shot put, he finished sixth at 31-5.75 (9.59m), then only cleared 5-8 (1.73m) in the high jump. He then closed out day one with a time of 52.34 in the 400.
Nicola Paletti of Montana State leads at the break with 3536 points.
Hughes' first day score of 2444 points is tempered by the fact that he failed to clear a height in the high jump.
The Eagles have no entries in the womens' heptathlon.
The meet resumes Thursday with the decathlon 110 hurdles at 10:00 am local time (9:00 am Pacific). The meet will be streamed on ESPN Plus ($).
In Spokane, a small group from Gonzaga competed at the Whitworth Last Chance meet Wednesday.
The women's 1500 saw both Rosina Machu and Willow Collins (Gonzaga Athletics photo) break the previous school record, with Machu getting the win in 4:16.86 and Collins behind in 4:16.93.
Brittney Hansen (4:24.79) and Anna Grabowski (4:27.19) dazzled the program top ten list, notching new seventh and eighth-fastest times, respectively.
As the West Coast Conference doesn't sponsor outdoor track as a championship sport, both the men and women of Gonzaga will head to Lewis & Clark College for the Portland Distance Carnival on Saturday in their final opportunities to earn a qualifying mark for the NCAA West Prelims in Fayetteville, Ark.
