WEEKEND ROUNDUP: Olympian Andrea Norris gets 2020 started with win at Jayhawk Classic...

In Lawrence, Kansas, University Place native and 2016 US Olympian Andrea (Geubelle) Norris (above/photo by Paul Merca) began her 2020 season with a victory in the triple jump at the Jayhawk Classic Friday (24 January).

Norris won the triple jump with a modest mark of 42-4 (12.90m), as she begins her comeback after nearly two years of competing off and on due to injuries.

The graduate of Curtis High School was originally slated to start her 2020 season at the UW Indoor Preview on January 18th, but her flight out of Kansas City was cancelled due to weather issues. She moved back to Lawrence, Kansas to train, where she had a successful collegiate career at the University of Kansas.

She also finished second in the long jump, with a best of 18-11.25 (5.77m).

One mark we missed from the Dr. Sander Columbia Challenge in New York Saturday was that of Washington alum Amy-Eloise Neale, as she finished fourth in the 3000 meters, running a personal best 8:56.54.

Nicole Hutchinson took the victory in 8:48.92.

Saint Martin's Michael Russell (23.15 seconds) was second in the 200m dash, just edging out his teammate Barrington Walker (23.19) by 4/100ths of a second.

The Redhawks got a victory in the women's 4 x 400 relay, as the team of sophomore Nicole Golba, freshman Maya McCabe, senior Michelle Newblom and sophomore Regie Grady finished in a combined first place in the field with their time of 4:03.11. McCabe also excelled in the 400m dash, where she ran a second-place 59.61, while Grady took third place in the 200m dash with a personal-best 26.16. Newblom also ran in the 200m dash, finishing best in her heat at 27.30.

Former Gonzaga standout Lindsey Drake, now running for the Bowerman TC, won the women's 3000 in 9:56.44, while recent Washington State grad Peyton Fredrickson won the high jump with a clearance of 6-9 (2.06m), beating Saint Martin's standout Tyler Cronk, who cleared 6-7 (2.01m).

David Njeri and Colby Otero both recorded top-5 finishes for Seattle Pacific.

Njeri, a sophomore newcomer to the Falcons, was fourth in the 400-meter dash, clocking 52.25. That was his first collegiate indoor 400.

Otero, also a sophomore, was fifth in the mile in 4 minutes, 24.23 seconds.
