Both Washington squads stay in USTFCCCA national top 25 after this weekend's meets...

NEW ORLEANS--Thanks to marks set at the Fresno State Invitational and the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational by Makayla Kelby (UW Athletics photo), Haley Herberg, Allie Schadler and Carley Thomas, the Washington women's squad moved up nine spots to number 14 in the latest USTFCCCA national outdoor track & field rating index released Monday.

Kelby had an outstanding double over the weekend in Fresno, throwing the shot a school record 55-10.5 (17.03m) and the discus 185-5 (56.50m) Saturday to move into the top 25 nationally.

Herberg (15:31.14) and Schadler (15:31.29) moved into the number 10 and 11 spot on the NCAA descending order list in the 5000 meters at Friday night's Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational.

The next day, Carley Thomas ran 2:04.49 in the 800 at Fresno to put herself at number 20 on the national descending order list.

There were no changes among the top-5 teams: Texas is the top-ranked team for a sixth-straight week, followed by No. 2 Texas A&M, No. 3 Florida, No. 4 LSU and No. 5 Texas Tech.

Pac-12 women's teams ranked in the national top 25 include number 9 Oregon, number 15 Arizona State, number 16 Stanford, number 21 USC, number 24 Cal, and number 25 Colorado.

On the men's side, the Huskies dropped two spots to number 18, with Elijah Mason's throw of 194-3 (59.19m) in the discus and Jonathan Birchman's 51.02 in the 400 hurdles the most significant marks set over the weekend in Fresno.

The top five teams are in order: Texas, Alabama, Florida. LSU and Texas A&M.

Pac-12 teams in the national top 25 include number 7 Oregon, number 9 USC, number 10 Stanford, number 21 Arizona State, and number 24 Cal.

In Bellingham, the GNAC Combined Events Championship got underway under blustery conditions at Civic Stadium Monday.

Western's Ryan Kenny and Alaska Anchorage's Elena Cano lead the decathlon and heptathlon at the break.

Kenny, who is competing in just his second-ever decathlon, finished the top-two in three of the five events to take the first-day lead with 3,365 points.

Saint Martin's Andrew Boyd is third at 3284, while Drew Klein of Central Washington is fourth at 3250, and Cooper Cummings is fifth at 3110.

Cano leads the heptathlon with 2887 points, while Central Washington's McCall DeChenne stands second at 2812. Leanne Kibbee of Western is sixth with 2407.

The GNAC Combined Events Championships conclude Tuesday. The decathlon will begin at 10:15 a.m. with the 110-meter hurdles followed by the discus, pole vault, javelin and the 1,500 meters. The heptathlon will commence at 11:15 a.m. with the long jump followed by the javelin and 800 meters.
