Central Washington's Drew Klein finishes second in GNAC decathlon...

BELLINGHAM--Central Washington's Drew Klein (photo courtesy Western Washington Athletics), who started the day in fourth place, finished second in the decathlon as the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Combined Events Championships concluded at Civic Stadium Tuesday.

Steven Schmidt of Northwest Nazarene, who won the indoor heptathlon title in Spokane in February, completed a sweep of the multi-event crowns to take the championship with a final score of 6488 points, to Klein's 6436.

Andrew Boyd of Saint Martin's maintained his hold of third place at the break to finish third with a final score of 6220, while first day leader Ryan Kenny of Western Washington slipped to fourth with a final score of 6053 points.

Klein finished third or better in all of the day two events, including a tie for first in the pole vault with a height of 13-7.25 (4.15m).

Boyd won two events in day 2, the 110 hurdles in 15.23, and the discus, with a throw of 117-3 (35.74m).

Klein's mark is over the NCAA D2 provisional score of 6420, and currently ranks 19th on the D2 descending order list.

The heptathlon competition saw Alaska Anchorage's Elena Cano, the first-day leader, lose her lead in the long jump and javelin to Western Oregon's Jenelle Hurley, but roared back with a blistering 2:18.91 to take the overall title over Hurley by a final count of 4936 to 4821.

Central Washington's McCall DeChenne, who started day two in second place, finished third with a final score of 4751 points, a new personal best, and a mark that's third best in school history.

Her mark is also over the NCAA D2 provisional standard of 4516 points, and ranks 16th on the descending order list.

With the conclusion of the combined events, Central Washington will now look towards hosting the GNAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Ellensburg. The event takes place at the CWU Recreational Sports Complex on May 13-14th.
