Thurmond seventh in Thessaloniki...

THESSALONIKI, Greece--Federal Way resident Aretha Thurmond (left/photo by Paul Merca) finished seventh in the women's discus competition at the IAAF/VTB Bank World Athletics Final today.

Thurmond, the tenth place finisher at the world championships in Berlin three weeks ago, threw a best of 195-7 (59.64m) on her second attempt of the day.

World championships silver medalist Yarelis Barrios of Cuba won the competition with a throw of 216-1 (65.86m) on her second attempt.

Barrios won her second straight WAF title tonight in a competition where three of her four throws would have sufficed for victory.
