Kara Patterson & Britney Henry set new stadium records in day 2 of Tuscon Elite meet...
TUSCON--Vancouver's Kara Patterson (above/photo by Paul Merca) launched two throws over 60 meters in day two of the Tuscon Elite meet, as she defeated long time friend and rival Rachel Yurkovich to win the women's javelin competition Saturday night at Drachman Stadium.
The four-time USA national champion from Vancouver's Skyview HS had a best of 198-0 (60.36m) to beat Yurkovich, the University of Oregon alum, who had a best of 196-5 (59.89m). In the process, Patterson broke the facility record she set on Thursday of 195-9 (59.66m) and set a season best.
Spokane native Britney Henry won the women's hammer competition, as she spun the ball and chain 229-7 (69.97m), an improvement over Thursday, where she was second at 224-10 (68.54m).
Henry's mark also was a new facility record, breaking the old mark of 229-6 (69.95m).
South Whidbey HS alum Kimery Hern finished second in the B section of the hammer, throwing 210-0 (64.00m), shorter than her winning throw of 213-7 (65.10m) on Thursday.
Roosevelt HS and University of Washington alum Norris Frederick again won the men's long jump competition, improving over Thursday's mark of 24-11 (7.59m) to 25-7 1/2 (7.81m).
Recent University of Washington grad Kyle Nielsen finished seventh in the men's javelin with a toss of 244-6 (74.53m) in round 2.
In the men's discus, Marysville-Pilchuck HS alum Jarred Rome finished fifth at 191-6 (58.38m) on his lone fair throw of the competition in round three. University of Washington alum Will Conwell of Club Northwest was seventh with a best of 190-1 (57.93m).
