LUCERNE, Switzerland--A trio of former Washington Huskies were in action Sunday at the Spitzen Leichathletik meeting, led by two athletes who competed in Barcelona at last week's European Championships.
In the men's discus, Märt Israel (left/photo by Paul Merca) who threw for the Dawgs in the 2006-07 academic year and finished ninth for Estonia in the Euro Champs, placed fourth with a throw of 204-4 (62.28), as Spain's Mario Pestano won the meet with a toss of 213-9 (65.17m).
Switzerland's Christian Belz, who placed sixth in the 10000 at last week's Euro Champs, dropped down in distance, as he finished 13th in the 3000m with a time of 8:16.23, in a race won by former University of California star David Torrence in a time of 7:54.61.
The third former Husky, Renton High School grad Aretha Thurmond was seventh in the women's discus, throwing only 193-10 (59.09m). Cuba's Yarelis Barrios continued her winning ways on the circuit, capturing the title with a mark of 210-3 (64.09m).
Rainier Beach HS graduate Ginnie Powell Crawford, who failed to make the finals in the DN Galan meet two days earlier in Stockholm, captured fourth place in the women's 100 meter hurdles, running 12.94, as Australia's Sally Pearson won in 12.59.
