Seniors Kailey Campbell and Mel Lawrence talk about their final UW race...
TERRE HAUTE, Indiana--With several hours to go before the NCAA cross country championships Monday, seniors Mel Lawrence and Kailey Campbell (left/file photo by Paul Merca) talked about their final race as members of the University of Washington cross country team.
After what Campbell, from Seattle's Ballard HS called "a not so good start to the season", the Huskies, who started the season ranked #3 in the USTFCCCA poll and dropped all the way down to #20 after their appearance here in Terre Haute last month at the Pre-Nationals, appear to be on the upswing after winning the NCAA West Regionals in Springfield, Oregon on November 13th.
Pack running will be a key, according to Lawrence, from Reno, NV., as in the last two races (Pac 10s & Regionals), the Huskies' 1-5 split was 22 and 20 seconds, as opposed to 1:39 at the Pre-Nationals, and 48 seconds at Notre Dame.
Earlier in the season, the Huskies ran a 1-5 split of 54 seconds at the Sundodger meet at Lincoln Park, and 1:05 versus Washington State University in Ephrata back on September 3rd.
