Whitworth Pirates finish 17th & 28th at NCAA Division III championships...
WAVERLY, Iowa--The Whitworth University women's cross country team finished 17th and the men's squad finished 28th in the NCAA Division III cross country championships Saturday at the Max Cross Country Course on the campus of Wartburg College.
The Spokane school, coached by Toby Schwarz, was led by sophomore Joy Shufeldt (left/photo courtesy Whitworth University) from Portland's Franklin HS, who finished 44th (27th team), running the 6k course in a time of 21:57.
Other scorers for the Whitworth Pirates included senior Tonya Turner (22:23), senior Dana Misterek (22:30), senior Kathryn Williams (22:35), and senior Adrienne Ritchie (24:02).
On the men's side, Whitworth's top runner was senior Nicholas Gallagher, who finished 131st (97th team) in 25:40. Other scorers were junior Aaron Jenkins (25:43), sophomore Trevor Berian (25:51), junior Tyler Dudley (26:27), and junior Kalen Darling (27:06).
Freshman Robin Harkins from the University of Puget Sound, who qualified for the meet as an individual, finished in 189th place in 26:01.
Senior Wendy Pavlus of St. Lawrence was the women's individual champion in 20:50, and Middlebury took the women's team title. Senior Anders Hulleberg won the men's title in 24:23 to help lead Haverford to the national title.
