Kara Patterson wins javelin competition, but falls short of world championship standard...
LISLE, Illinois--Vancouver native Kara Patterson's (left/photo by Paul Merca) attempt at making a third world championship team came up a little short, as the three-time national champion threw a season best of 187-5 (57.12m) to win the javelin competition at the Chicagoland Throwers Series meet on the campus of Benedictine University outside of Chicago.
After opening with a toss of 185-10 (56.64m), the Purdue University graduate got her best mark in round two.
Patterson, who finished third in the national championships last month in Des Moines, Iowa, needed to throw the IAAF 'A' standard of 203-5 (62.00m) by this weekend for her to join national champ Brittany Borman on the plane to Moscow.
On her Facebook page after the meet, she said, "I didn't get the job done today, but had a season's best, was aggressive from the first round of competition on, and had a blast throwing in my second meet of the season!"
Patterson, who now resides at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, has spent almost nine months rehabbing her left knee, after tearing the ACL at last year's US Olympic Trials in Eugene.
