Katie Mackey finishes eighth in the 3000m at world indoors...

BIRMINGHAM, United Kingdom—In her first appearance on a major USA national track & field team, University of Washington alum Katie Mackey (left/photo by Kirby Lee, Image of Sport) finished eighth in the women’s 3000 Thursday at the IAAF World Indoor Track & Field Championships at Arena Birmingham.

Mackey ran 8:56.62, sitting towards the back of the pack in what was a very tactical race for the first half, then began picking people off when the real racing began with 1000 meters to go.

Ethiopia’s Genzebe Dibaba won her third world indoor title, running 8:45.05, followed by Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands and the Nike Oregon Project in 8:45.68.  Laura Muir of Great Britain was third in 8:45.78.
