UW sophomore Anna Gibson sets personal best in winning Desert Dream mile Saturday night...

The outdoor track & field season slowly resumed Saturday night in San Tan Valley, Arizona, just outside of Phoenix at the Desert Dream high school meet, with a few open events sprinkled in for good measure.

University of Washington sophomore Anna Gibson (left/photo by Paul Merca) won the women's open mile, running a personal best 4:40.59, to beat Husky teammate and Arizona native Allie Schadler, who ran 4:41.79.

The race was a breakthrough for Gibson, who set her previous personal best of 4:43.06 as a high school senior at Jackson Hole HS in Jackson, Wyoming at the 2017 adidas Boston Boost Games.

Gibson, who was recruited by current Washington coach Maurica Powell when she was at Oregon, instead went to Brown University, where after tearing the peroneus longus in her foot, spent three frustrating semesters before transferring to Washington last spring.

For Schadler, this was the first mile race she'd run in the 2020 season, after moving up during the indoor season to the 3000, with the exception of a leg on the Huskies' distance medley relay at the UW Invitational in late January.

Incoming Washington freshman Cruz Culpepper finished second in the high school boys' 800 meter run, as the Niwot (Colorado) HS standout, ran a personal best 1:48.50, behind John Lester of California's Amador Valley HS, who won in 1:48.26.
