Western Washington's Raquel Pellecer opens with NCAA D2 national leader in javelin at Ed Boitano Invite...

TACOMA—Yes, it’s only the first weekend of the 2019 outdoor track and field season.

Okay, there is still an NCAA indoor track and field championship meet to contest next weekend.

But for the javelin throwers, and others who don’t get the opportunity to compete indoors, Saturday was the day to get the rust buster out of the way.

For Western Washington’s Raquel Pellecer (left/photo by Paul Merca), the rust buster came in an NCAA Division II leading throw of 155-2 (47.31m) to win the competition at the Ed Boitano Invitational hosted by the University of Puget Sound.

Despite a crosswind that moved from the throwers’ left to right, Pellecer, a graduate of Sandy HS in Oregon, who finished sixth at the NCAA championships last year as a sophomore, threw the second furthest mark in her career.

The Vikings swept the first three places, with freshman Paige Shimkus (146-1/44.53m) and sophomore Hannah Nienaber (137-3/41.85m) taking the other two spots.

For what it’s worth, given the fact that it’s the first full weekend of the 2019 outdoor season, those marks are currently the nation’s top three throws in NCAA Division II, pending the outcome of other meets around the country this weekend.

Complete results of the Ed Boitano Invitational are available here.
