Washington's Tanner Anderson runs second fastest indoor 5000m in school history in Boston...
BOSTON--Tanner Anderson (left/photo courtesy UW Sports Information) of the University of Washington ran the second fastest time in school history over 5000 meters Saturday at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener at the Boston University Track & Tennis Center.
The BU indoor track has the reputation of being one of the fastest indoor tracks in the country, and as the opening weekend of the 2020 indoor track season got underway, Boston University attracted a stellar field in both the men's and women's 5000 meters, featuring the recently crowned NCAA cross country champions, Edwin Kurgat of Iowa State, and Weini Kelati of New Mexico.
After pacemakers Jordan Mann (8:08.51) and Seattle resident and UW volunteer coach Amos Bartelsmeyer (10:51.08) led the field through 3000 and 4000 meters respectively, Kurgat took the victory in 13:24.04, just ahead of former Bellingham resident and US Olympian Donn Cabral, who ran 13:25.56.
Iowa State alum Dan Curts, a former All-American from Iowa State who is now training in Seattle, finished seventh in a personal best of 13:38.98, just ahead of Anderson, the product of Spokane's North Central HS, who ran 13:40.42.
Seattle resident and Husky volunteer coach Sam Prakel finished tenth in 13:48.79.
Anderson's mark of 13:40.42 was a personal best, eclipsing his previous PR of 13:43.74 set in 2018 while attending the University of Oregon, and would have qualified him for the 2019 NCAA indoor championships. It also trails Colby Gilbert's UW school record of 13:34.85 set in 2017.
Taylor Werner of Arkansas, who was fourth at the NCAA cross country championship race, upset Kelati to win the women's 5000 in 15:11.19, as Kelati was third in 15:14.71, behind Arkansas' Katie Izzo's 15:13.09.
As Werner competed unattached, Izzo is the current collegiate leader for the time being.
Washington State senior Reid Muller finished sixth in the men's 3000, running 8:15.02 in his debut over that distance.
Evan Verbal, formerly of Colorado Christian, was the winner in 8:01.02.
