Katie Nageotte to jump in the Ultimate Garden Clash Saturday; David Ribich to stream two mile time trial Friday...
Former Pullman resident and Washington State University volunteer coach Katie Nageotte (above/photo by Paul Merca) will be one of three vaulters jumping in the Ultimate Garden Clash this Saturday (May 16th) from her training base in Marietta, Georgia, starting at 9 am, pacific time.
Building on the success of the men's Ultimate Garden Clash on May 3rd featuring Renaud Lavillenie of France, Mondo Duplantis of Sweden, and Sam Kendricks of the USA, Nageotte will jump virtually against Stanford alum and defending Olympic champion Katerina Stefanidi of Greece, and Canada's Alysha Newman.
You can watch the event live on the World Athletics YouTube channel, or on its Facebook, Twitter or Instagram accounts.
In this competition, the three will attempt to clear 13-1.5 (4.00m) as many times as possible in two 15-minute halves. In the event of a miss, each vaulter is responsible for putting up the bar themselves.
They will be connected by video link from their local training facilities as none of the women have the necessary equipment in their own back yards as the men did. Stefanidi will jump from her training facility in Athens, Greece, while Newman will jump from Bolton, Ontario, weather permitting.
It will be a test of technique, consistency, concentration and stamina – all qualities that are required in a normal pole vault competition, just measured in an alternate way.
“This format is so much fun!," said Nageotte, whose indoor PB of 16-1.25 (4.91m) matches Stefanidi's outdoor best. “It’s non-stop action which is extremely appealing to fans. There is constant entertainment with the vaulters trying to take as many jumps as possible in a short time, and that’s something sports fans really appreciate. This format is also very simplified. Everyone is jumping at the same bar (height) as many times as we can. There’s no passing, height changes, or other aspects of the pole vault that can sometimes lead to confusion for spectators. It’s as head-to-head as it gets and we all love a good head-to-head competition!”
