UW alum Brian Fay wins Athletics Ireland's 2023 endurance athlete of the year
Recent University of Washington alum Brian Fay (Paul Merca photo) was named by Athletics Ireland as its 2023 Endurance Athlete Of the Year in a ceremony in Dublin Wednesday.
The Irish national champion this season at 5000 meters broke the national record in that event when he ran 13:01.40 at the Night of Athletics meet in Heusden, Belgium on July 15th. That mark shattered the Irish national record of 13:03.53 set in 2011 by Alistair Cragg.
In addition, Fay also ducked under the Paris Olympic Games standard of 13:05.00, and earned a spot on the line at the world championships in Budapest,
He also competed in his first Wanda Diamond League final at the Nike Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, where he finished ninth.
In his senior season at Washington, he was the runner-up to Joe Waskom in the mile at the UW Invitational on January 28th, where he ran 3:52.03 in a race that saw eight Huskies dip under 4 minutes in the same race.
Fay scored in the mile at the NCAA indoor championships in Albuquerque, placing eighth, and won the 5000/10000 double at the Pac-12 track & field championships in Walnut, scoring 20 points as the Huskies won their first ever Pac-12 team title.
Last Saturday, Fay finished fifth in the Irish cross country championships, running 31:30 for 9k in Gowran, Ireland. He was selected by the Irish federation to compete in the European Cross Country Championships in Brussels, Belgium next month.
“It was a good year for me, a good year for Irish endurance running so to be selected is an honor,” Fay said in an interview
