Seattle resident Sam Prakel finishes second in Lignano 1500 Sunday...

LIGNANO, Italy-
-Seattle resident Sam Prakel (Paul Merca photo) slowly made up for the disappointment of not advancing to the finals at the US Olympic Trials with a solid second place finish in the men's 1500 meters at Sunday's Meeting Internazionale Sport Solidarietà.

Prakel, who was second in the mile in Friday's Morton Games meet in Dublin, Ireland, positioned himself in the middle of the pack before making his charge with 250 meters to go, towing training partner and defending Lignano champion Joe Waskom along with him.

Tunisia's Mohamed Jhinaoui jumped to the lead past the 1200 mark and held it, taking the victory in a personal best 3:35.90, ahead of Prakel's 3:36.04, and Waskom's 3:36.44.

In the women's 800, Washington's Sophie O'Sullivan finished fifth in a personal best of 2:00.28, while UW alum Carley Thomas finished ninth in 2:01.44, as Italy's Eloisa Coiro won in a personal best 1:59.26.

In the first section of the women's 800, UW grad student Samantha Friborg was eighth in 2:08.38, five days after getting spiked in Cork.

O'Sullivan came back from the 800 to pace the women's 1500 for about a thousand meters.

In that 1500, Italy's Sintayehu Vista won in a meet record 4:03.35, while Washington alum Izzi Batt-Doyle, who is sharpening up for the 5000 at the Olympics, ran a personal best of 4:08.48 to finish eighth.

Batt-Doyle's previous personal best was 4:12.00, set in this very meet three years ago.

Chloe Foerster of the Huskies was 14th in 4:21.09.

Several athletes from the UW group that's traveled to Ireland and Italy are expected to run in Lappeeranta, Finland on Wednesday. Which athletes will compete will be confirmed by meet organizers.
