WEEKEND ROUNDUP: Sam Prakel wins 1500m race in Leuven, Belgium Saturday...
Even with the start of the Olympic track & field competiton in Paris in a few days, there were still some small meets around the European continent for folks trying to sharpen up, or get in an extra meet before going home.
That was the case for Seattle resident Sam Prakel (Paul Merca photo), who raced in Leuven, Belgium Saturday at the Meeting voor Mon.
Prakel took the win in the men's 1500 in 3:36.18, beating former Husky Sam Tanner.
Tanner, who races in the first round of the Olympic 1500 meters on Friday, ran 3:36.52, while UW grad Sam Ellis was 12th in a season best 3:38.63.
Ellis also jumped into a heat of the mens 400, running 50.34 to take fifth.
In Birmingham, England, Washington's Jami Schlueter finished third in the England Athletics decathlon championship, scoring 7452 points Saturday and Sunday.
Out of the ten events, his best performance came in the 110 hurdles, where he ran 14.50.
Sammy Ball won the English title with a final score of 7776 points.
