Måkestad falls short in European Championships semi-finals...
BARCELONA, Spain--Former University of Washington runner Ingvill Måkestad (left/photo courtesy runingvill.wordpress.com) from Norway finished sixth in the second semi-final of the women's 1500 meter run Friday at the European Championships in the Estadi Olimpici.
Måkestad clocked 4:07.49 as Asli Cakir of Turkey won the heat in a time of 4:05.53.
The top four from each of the two semis advanced to the finals Sunday, along with the four fastest qualifiers; however, the first semi-final was the fastest, as all four of the time qualifiers for Sunday's final came from the first heat.
In the women's high jump qualifying held earlier Friday, former NCAA indoor high jump champion Ebba Jungmark from Sweden finished eighth in her group's qualifying round, and failed to advance to Sunday's final.
Jungmark cleared a season's best of 6-2 3/4 (1.90m), as 6-3 1/2 (1.92m) was the height needed to advance to the finals.
On Saturday, former University of Washington thrower Mart Israel from Estonia competes in the qualifying round of the men's discus.
