Märt Israel wins discus at World University Games...
SHENZHEN, China--In his final tuneup before heading to Daegu for the IAAF World Championships, Märt Israel of Estonia, who competed for one season at the University of Washington, won the gold medal in the men's discus Sunday evening at the World University Games as the track & field competition concluded.
Israel took the victory with a fourth round throw of 210-2 (64.07m), to overtake Poland's Przemyslaw Czajkowski, the event's early leader, who threw a best of 208-9 (63.62m).
Brazil's Ronald Juliao took home the bronze medal with a toss of 207-8 (63.30m), as all three medallists had their best marks of the competition in the fourth round.
In Saturday's semifinals of the men's 4 x 400 meter relay, Team USA, with World University Games champ Jeshua Anderson of Washington State University on the squad, was disqualified for exchanging positions before the takeover (IAAF Rule 170.9) and did not advance to Sunday's final.
