Katie Mackey lowers 3000m outdoor personal best at London Diamond League stop...

LONDON, England—Even though it wasn’t a scoring event at this meet in the IAAF Diamond League series, the women’s 3000 race rewarded University of Washington alum Katie Mackey (left/photo by Paul Merca) of the Brooks Beasts with a personal best.

Mackey broke her previous personal best of 8:46.58 set in Monaco two years ago in finishing third at the Müller Anniversary Games at London Stadium Saturday.

Mackey ran 8:44.47, as Kenya’s Lilian Rengeruk won in 8:41.51, with former Florida State standout Susan Krumins of the Netherlands second in 8:41.83.

In other events, Vancouver’s Kara Winger finished fifth in the javelin with a best of 199-7 (60.84m), as China’s Lyu Huihui won with a best of 215-0 (65.54m).

With only the Diamond League final in Zurich on August 30th remaining, Winger stands fourth in the javelin with 13 points, as Lyu’s win gave her the Diamond League lead in the event with 23 points after four qualifying meets.

In the men’s 5000, former Emerald Ridge HS standout Hassan Mead finished ninth with a season best 13:19.81, as the US Army’s Paul Chelimo won in 13:14.01.

The meet resumes Sunday, with both University of Washington volunteer assistant coach Matthew Centrowitz and Washington alum Izaic Yorks, who was fourth in the Athletics World Cup meet last week in this same venue, will run in the men’s 1500, which is a non-Diamond League scoring event.

Day 1 results of the Müller Anniversary Games are available here.

The Olympic Channel (channel 660 on Comcast Seattle) will have live coverage starting at 6 am.

In Heusden, Belgium, Camas’ Alexa Efraimson ran a season best in the women’s 1500 at the Nacht van de Atletiek meeting Saturday night.

Efraimson ran 4:07.06 to take third, as Villanova alum Emily Lipari won in 4:05.68.

In the men’s 400 hurdles, Washington State alum CJ Allen was fourth in a time of 49.40, as Jeffery Gibson of the Bahamas won in 48.98.
