STANFORD, California—University of Washington alum Amy-Eloise Neale (left/photo by Paul Merca) ducked under the IAAF world championships standard of 15:22.00 and set a new personal best in the 5000 meter run Thursday night at the Payton Jordan Invitational meet at Cobb Track & Angell Field on the Stanford University campus.

Neale, who now resides in Charlottesville, Virginia, where she’s part of the Reebok Boston Track Club, was part of a group of eight that ran together for most of the race.

On the final lap, she ran the fastest 400 in the field, clocking 62.44, but it wasn’t enough to catch former world 1500m champion Jenny Simpson, as she ran 15:21.12 to take the victory, while Rachel Schneider was second at 15:21.44.

Neale’s final time was 15:21.58, eclipsing her previous personal best of 15:24.16 set at this meet last year.

Washington alum Mel Lawrence finished seventh in 15:24.69, while current Husky Izzi Batt-Doyle was 18th in a personal best 15:41.36, which is the #5 all-time mark in school history.

The Huskies’ Mick Stanovsek finished eighth in the top section of the mens’ 1500 in 3:41.20, which is the fifth fastest time in UW history.

In another section of the men’s 1500, Washington State’s Paul Ryan finished third in 3:46.95.

In the women’s 1500, Allie Schadler of the Huskies finished second in her section, running a personal best 4:16.57, while in the 3000 steeplechase, Emily Hamlin ran a season best 10:05.79 to finish 10th.

Section 2 of the men’s 5000 saw Gonzaga’s James Mwaura finish 11th in 13:46.17, a new school record.
