Couple of items to pass along:
Here are a pair of articles on incoming University of Washington freshmen Leo Daschbach (left/photo by Paul Merca) and Cruz Culpepper.
Daschbach, a product of Highland HS in Gilbert, Arizona, won two straight Arizona Division I individual titles, and was a two-time Gatorade HS cross country runner of the year, and was also Arizona's Gatorade HS track & field athlete of the year in 2019. He was also third in the mile at last year's Brooks PR meet at Husky Track, where he ran 4:03.98.
He ran a 4:03.7 mile last Saturday at a track in Arizona, while competing in the MileSplit Virtual Classic.
The article, which was written originally in November and updated a few days ago, is available here, while video of his attempt at a sub-4 mile is available here.
Meanwhile, Track & Field News has an article on Culpepper, the third fastest indoor miler in US high school history.
Culpepper, the product of Niwot HS in Colorado, and the son of two-time US Olympians Alan (10000 Sydney and marathon Athens) and Shayne (1500 Sydney and 5000 Athens), won the Colorado state 4A cross country title, and intended to skip his senior track season to chase some big goals, and try and qualify for the US Olympic Trials.
On why Culpepper ended up at Washington to be coached by Andy Powell, he said, “A lot of it came down to how well he has been coaching milers and my connection with him and the guys on the team,” Culpepper says, adding, “Seattle’s perfect for training and being at sea level is going to be more beneficial for training for the mile than being at altitude, I think. And it’s a great academic school as well.”
