HUSKY CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS RACE IN VEGAS MONDAY...
The University of Washington men's and women's cross country teams open the delayed 2020 season Monday morning at the Silver State Cross Country Challenge in Las Vegas at Craig Ranch Regional Park.
The Husky men, ranked number 18 in the last USTFCCCA Division I poll will race in the Yellow race (top seeded race) against number 1 Northern Arizona, number 2 BYU, number 4 Notre Dame, number 24 Weber State, and number 27 Air Force over an 8k course at 10 am.
One hour later, Washington's women, currently ranked number 8 in the last USTFCCCA poll, will also run in the top seeded Yellow race against number 3 BYU, number 4 New Mexico, number 13 Boise State, number 18 Utah, number 24 Notre Dame, and number 26 Northern Arizona.
The challenge facing the Husky coaching staff, as well as the other teams who are running athletes who are also trying to qualify for the NCAA indoor championships, is balancing their team and individual needs.
"With the distance kids for who we have to choose cross country or track, the driving force is what's in the best interest of the athlete. Because they've been so patient, and they've trained so hard for so long, whatever they want to run is what they're going to run. We're going to serve each student-athlete."
"We've kept a lot of our same seniors and then added a good recruiting class, so I think a lot of those goals of having a good group qualify for nationals and taking a run at doing something big at the Pac-12 meet (hosted by the Huskies on March 5th at Chambers Bay GC in University Place, near Tacoma) is something we're all still geared towards," says UW head coach Andy Powell on the men's squad.
Flotrack ($) will live stream the meet beginning at 8:00 am.
Live results of the Silver State Cross Country Challenge in Las Vegas will be available here.
REDHAWKS OPEN CROSS COUNTRY SEASON AGAINST PORTLAND...
In the opening meet of the delayed 2020 cross country season, Seattle University ran a small group of athletes Sunday morning in a dual meet against the University of Portland on the Portland campus.
The men's 7500m race kicked off first, with junior Lance Slichko leading the way for the Redhawks (9th overall) with a time of 25:06. Another junior Ansel Pendley-Griffin followed up Slichko with a time of 25:25. and rounding out the Redhawks' top three was freshman Lance Mason, coming in with a time of 25:27. Junior Stephen Crocker crossed the finish line with a time of 25:32, while freshman Alex Jensen rounded out the Redhawks' top five with a time of 25:48.
Portland, led by winner John Kavulich's 24:19, cruised to a perfect 15-50 score.
On the women's side, sophomore Emily Harris was just 13 seconds off winner McKenna Smith (21:33) of the Pilots, finishing with a time of 21:46 (3rd overall) in the 5320m race. Freshman Maya McCabe was eighth with a time of 23:29, as the Redhawks fielded an incomplete team.
"I was happy with how the group did considering this was not a typical race for us. This race was a lot different than what we would normally run on as the course went through Portland's campus. This included us running through muddy grass, on the sidewalk, and at some parts in the street. This made for a fun time because we got to do something we had not done before."
Seattle University plays host to the Western Athletic Conference cross country championships on February 27th at Jefferson Park Golf Course.
Seattle University's race recap is available here, while complete results of the SeattleU/University of Portland dual are available here.
