Camas' Alexa Efraimson announces retirement after eight-year pro career...

In a post on her Instagram page, Camas native Alexa Efraimson (Paul Merca photos) announced her retirement from the sport.

In her post, she expected that the 2022 season wouldn't be her last, especially coming off what she called a "rough" 2021 campaign, where she did not get out of the first round of the US Olympic Trials in the 1500.

But as the season went on, she realized that she wasn't enjoying the sport anymore, and that, "I had no fight or fire in races."

Efraimson set the American under-20 record in the 1500 meters at the Nike Prefontaine Classic on May 30, 2015, where she ran 4:03.39.

Efraimson turned pro after her junior year at Camas in 2014. In the 2014 season, she won the state 4A titles at 800 and 1600, running 2:04.10, and 4:33.29, won the USA U20 1500 title in 4:16.87, and finished sixth at the World U20 championships in Eugene, running 4:13.31.

She made the finals in the 1500 at the 2016 US Olympic Trials in Eugene, finishing sixth.

Two weeks later, she placed fifth in the 1500 at the World U20 championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland, improving one spot from her placing in 2014.

The 2019 season was perhaps her best season as a pro at the senior level, as she had a stretch where she ran 4:04.53 and 4:04.06 in a span of three days in China. That season, she finished third in the 1500 at the Pan American Games in Lima, Peru.

Efraimson was coached by Mike Hickey for the majority of her pro career, before she moved to be coached by Pete Julian at the Union Athletics Club.
