Eastern's Egypt Simmons breaks school triple jump record for third straight meet in Long Beach...
With events ending late Thursday night in Azusa at day one of the Bryan Clay Invitational at Azusa Pacific University, here's a recap of what happened in the greater Los Angeles area:
SIMMONS CONTINUES TO WIN IN LONG BEACH...
At the Pacific Coast Invitational at Jack Rose Track on the campus of Long Beach State, Caitlin "Egypt" Simmons (EWU Athletics photo) continued her assault on the Eastern Washington school record in the women's triple jump, breaking the mark for the third straight meet.
Simmons jumped 41-11.25 (12.78m) for the win, continuing her outdoor undefeated streak in the event this season.
The Eagles also picked up a win in the men's javelin, as Ryan Rieckmann finished first with a throw of 219-4 (66.86m), while Logan Ashbeck was fourth at 201-9 (61.49m).
In the men's 800, Owen Higgins was third in 1:51.89.
Action in Long Beach continues Friday with the start of the two-day Beach Invitational, with entries from Eastern Washington, Washington State, Western Washington and Seattle Pacific.
ESVELT ALL BUT ASSURED A SPOT IN NCAA D2 CHAMPS IN 10000...
Up the road in Azusa, Seattle Pacific's Annika Esvelt all but assured herself a spot in the NCAA Division II championships in the 10000 meters at the Bryan Clay Invitational hosted by Azusa Pacific University.
Running in the top section of the women's 10000, Esvelt finished 16th in 33:41.59, which is the second fastest time in SPU history, behind only Norwegian world championships competitor Bente Moe's 33:05.80 set way back in 1987.
"That went pretty much according to plan," Esvelt said. "I felt like I paced it really well and had a group (around me) that was really good for pacing. I felt like during the middle, like around 5K, I felt better than maybe I thought I was going to. And then with eight laps to go, I didn't feel as terrible as I thought I would."
Her time is currently the third fastest in NCAA D2.
Washington State's Kelvin Limo took the Pac-12 lead in the steeplechase with his tenth place finish in the second section, running 8:48.93.
In the first section, Club Northwest's Mac Franks finished second in 8:43.31. In the same section, Cooper Laird of Gonzaga was seventh in 8:49.12.
The Bryan Clay Invitational continues Friday with the 5000s and 800s on tap, with action finishing close to midnight.
WHITWORTH TWILIGHT RECAP...
Central Washington athletes picked up ten wins, while Washington State competitors earned five wins at the Whitworth Twilight meet Thursday at the Pine Bowl, hosted by Whitworth University in Spokane.
In a fairly low-key meet, the best marks of the day came from Ellie DeGroot of Central Washington, who won the women's 400 hurdles in 62.64, and from teammate E'lexis Hollis, who won the women's 200 in a GNAC leading time of 24.42.
