Number of current UW and Husky alums competing Tuesday in Ireland & Hungary...
The European circuit continues Tuesday with a pair of meets in Cork, Ireland and Szekesfehervar, Hungary with the running of the Cork City Sports International Athletics Meet, and the Gyulai Istvan Memorial.
CORK CITY INTERNATIONAL PREVIEW...
In Cork, eight athletes with ties to the University of Washington or coach Andy Powell's pro group are entered in the Cork City meet, which is a World Athletics Continental Tour-Bronze meet.
It's headlined by Sophie O'Sullivan (Paul Merca photo), who won the Irish national title in the 1500 last week.
O'Sullivan is using this meet to sharpen up for the Olympics, where she is one of three Irish women holding the Olympic standard.
She'll be in a field that includes two current Huskies: Julia David-Smith, who competed in the French championships two weeks ago; and Chloe Foerster, who last competed in the US Olympic Trials.
Joining the trio in the field is Washington alum Eleanor Fulton.
In the men's mile, US Olympic Trials finalist Joe Waskom will run in a field that includes Husky teammate Luke Houser of the Brooks Beasts, and training partner and former Husky volunteer coach Sam Prakel, who made the finals at the Trials in the 5000.
Washington grad Samantha Friborg is entered in the women's 800, while Seattle resident Derek Holdsworth, who withdrew from the Olympic Trials 800 while warming up due to a hip flexor abdominal strain, will run in the men's 800.
Holdsworth raced a few days ago in Maisons-Laffitte, France where he was eighth in the 1000 meters in 2:24.83.
The meet will be streamed on the European Athletics YouTube channel starting at 8:45 am, Pacific time.
GYULAI MEMORIAL
Szekesfehervar, Hungary is the site of Tuesday's Gyulai Istvan Memorial meet, which is a World Athletics Continental Tour-Gold meet.
Washington State's Maribel Caicedo, who had a rough start to her European tour in Sotteville, France on July 4th, is entered in the 100 hurdles, where she goes against a field that includes former world champ Nia Ali, and Australians Michelle Jenneke & Liz Clay, along with defending Olympic champion Jasmine Camacho-Quinn of Puerto Rico.
University of Washington alum and two-time Canadian 1500 meter champ Kieran Lumb is entered in the men's 3000, along with Gonzaga alum Yacine Guermali, who last month, became eligible to represent the Philippines in international competition.
Flotrack ($) will stream the meet starting at 8:30 am Pacific time.
BATT-DOYLE OFFICIALLY NAMED TO AUSTRALIAN OLYMPIC TEAM...
Washington alum Izzi Batt-Doyle, who was passed over by Athletics Australia in the marathon in May, was officially named to the Olympic team in the 5000 meters.
Batt-Doyle ran a personal best 14:49.75 in Liege, Belgium on June 19th, under the Olympic standard of 14:52.00.
With Oregon alum Jessica Hull opting to run only the 1500 for Australia, Batt-Doyle will join Rose Davies and Jenny Blundell in that event.
This marks her second straight Olympic team in that event.
