With over a week before the start of the track & field competition at the Olympics, the USA Track & Field Foundation announced its 2024 class of Stephen A. Schwarzman grant award winners.

The Stephen A. Schwarzman grant awards represent the pinnacle of support offered by the Foundation, providing crucial assistance to Team USA athletes as they prepare for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

This year, 65 professional track and field athletes will receive $30,000 Stephen A. Schwarzman grants, while an additional 35 athletes will receive $20,000 grants. In total, these 100 outstanding athletes will receive $2.65 million in support. This funding will help cover expenses such as equipment, coaching, travel, medical costs, recovery tools, and other essential needs for these professional athletes.

Among those receiving grants from the foundation are Olympians Marisa Howard (Paul Merca photo) from Pasco; Nia Akins of the Brooks Beasts; Washington State alum CJ Allen; former Pullman resident Katie Moon; Brandon Miller of the Brooks Beasts; and Walla Walla native Kenneth Rooks.

Woodinville native Olivia Markezich, who finished sixth in the Olympic Trials steeplechase, also received a grant from the Foundation, as part of a group of 14 athletes who recently graduated from college with Olympic aspirations trying to transition from collegiate track to pro track.

According to its release, all USATF Foundation grants are selected from a pool of qualified applicants. Elite athletes are required to apply each year and are encouraged to complete the process in May or June. The Stephen A. Schwarzman Grants are decided upon by the USATF Foundation Elite Grant Committee, with criteria primarily based on athletes’ potential to medal at the next Olympic Games or World Championships. Consideration is also given to monetary need.

Schwarzman is the CEO and chair of the Blackstone Group, a private equity firm based in New York
