Washington alum Nathan Green finishes sixth in finals of 1500m at world indoor champs...
TORUN, Poland--Competing in his first senior international final, University of Washington alum Nathan Green (photo courtesy USA Track & Field), finished sixth in the men's 1500 meter run Sunday night at Kujawsko-Pomorska Arena Toruń on the final day of competition at the World Athletics Indoor Championships.
Green was in the middle of the pack, running a very conservative pace, crossing the line in 64.8.
Over the next 400 meters, the pace picked up slightly, as the field went through just a hair over 2:05 at the 800.
The pace ramped up sharply over the next lap, as Spain's Mariano Garcia threw in a 28 second lap in an attempt to shake up the field.
At the 1200 mark, Green crossed in 3:00.45, as Garcia, Isaac Nader of Portugal, and Samuel Pihlstrom of Sweden tried to pull away.
Despite closing the last lap in 26.90, it was not enough for Green to get in a spot for the podium, as he finished in 3:40.78.
Garcia won in 3:39.63, with Nader second in 3:40.06, and Wisconsin alum Adam Spencer of Australia was third in 3:40.06.
After the race, Green told reporters, "It's kinda tough not to medal, when you come from the US. World teams are kinda hard to come by. It's a race that I haven't been in quite some time. It was quite a cut down," referring to the sharp jump in pace over the last 700 meters of the race.
"Certainly a lot of good takeaways, though. I made the final, which is huge. Sixth in the world after being injured from all of November until Christmas, so I can't really be too mad about that. But yeah, I definitely wanted to be on the podium."
Green was the only athlete with Washington ties competing on the final day of the world indoor championships.
