Nageotte & Mackey entered in final regular season IAAF Diamond League meet in Birmingham Saturday...
The IAAF Diamond League series resumes Saturday after a four-week break for various national and continental championship meets around the world with the Birmingham Diamond League meet.
The Birmingham meet is the final regular season meet before the first of two final meetings in Zürich and Brussels to determine this season’s individual Diamond League champions.
Among those with Washington ties competing in Birmingham Saturday are Pullman’s Katie Nageotte (left/photo by Paul Merca), who won the NACAC pole vault title in Toronto last week, along with Katie Mackey of the Seattle-based Brooks Beasts.
Going into the Birmingham meet, Nageotte is currently in fourth place with 21 points, one point behind reigning world, European, and Olympic champion Katerina Stefanidi, with both having competed in five Diamond League meets this season.
Sandi Morris, the reigning world indoor champion, who finished third behind Nageotte in Toronto last week, leads the Diamond League standings with 32 points in five meets this season.
With the exception of second place (24) Anzhelika Sidorova and fifth place (19) Jenn Suhr, all of the top eight vaulters in the Diamond League standings will be in Birmingham, as they jockey for points before the women’s pole vault finals in Zürich on August 30th.
Mackey, who set a personal best at 3000 meters of 8:44.47 on July 21st in finishing third at the London Diamond League stop, goes against a field that includes Hellen Obiri of Kenya, who sits second this season in the 3000/5000 in the Diamond League standings and is the defending world champion; and a host of athletes familiar to collegiate track & field fans including Elena Burkhard of Germany (San Francisco); Susan Krumins of the Netherlands (Florida State); and Dominique Scott of South Africa (Arkansas).
The Olympic Channel (channel 660 on Comcast Seattle) will offer live coverage of the Birmingham Diamond League meet starting at 6 am Seattle time.
