Washington State men move up seven spots in latest USTFCCCA Division I coaches' poll...

NEW ORLEANS—Last weekend’s Pac-12 championship meet at Stanford allowed the Washington State Cougars to bounce back in the latest USTFCCCA Division I coaches’ poll released Tuesday.

In the men’s national rankings, the Cougars, who finished fifth at the Pac-12s, moved seven spots from number 29 to number 22, led by senior Chandler Teigen’s (left/photo by Paul Merca) seventh place finish.

Washington State was the biggest mover in the national poll, and puts the team in a position to return to the top 20 with a strong showing at the NCAA West Regionals in Sacramento on November 9th.

The University of Washington maintained their number 7 ranking from the previous poll, despite their highest ever team finish at the Pac-12 championships, where they took second behind team champion Stanford.

The nation’s top five men’s teams are in order: Northern Arizona, BYU, Wisconsin, Portland, and Stanford.

Other Pac-12 teams in the top 30 include number 8 Colorado, number 11 Oregon, and number 24 UCLA, which sets up the possibility of a nationally ranked team(s) from the West region being left out of the NCAA championships.

Besides the Portland Pilots (Colorado and Utah are the only Pac-12 schools that competes in the Mountain Region), other teams in the West Region ranked nationally include number 9 Boise State, and number 28 Gonzaga, which dropped two spots, after making it to the national top 30 for the first time in program history after the Wisconsin Pre-Nationals.

On the women’s side, the Washington Huskies dropped one spot to number 17 after finishing fourth at the Pac-12s.

The nation’s top five teams in order are: New Mexico, Oregon, Boise State, Colorado, and Arkansas.

The only other Pac-12 school ranked is number 6 Stanford. The only other team from the West Region not in the Pac-12 ranked nationally is number 19 Portland.
