Husky men's team earn program's highest ranking in USTFCCCA coaches' poll, while Gonzaga breaks in for first time...

NEW ORLEANS—The results from Saturday’s Wisconsin Pre-Nationals Invitational in Madison last Saturday had a major effect in how the voters of the USTFCCCA cross country coaches’ poll ranked the nation’s top teams.

Among the big movers were the University of Washington and Gonzaga University men’s teams in the results of the poll released Tuesday.

After the Huskies finished second in the White section behind BYU, the Dawgs find themselves ranked number 7 in the country, which is the highest they’ve been ranked in the history of the USTFCCCA coaches’ poll.  Husky head coach Andy Powell’s (above, in cap/photo by Paul Merca) squad moved up five spots from the last poll two weeks ago.

Pat Tyson’s Gonzaga Bulldogs are nationally ranked for the first time in program history, after finishing ninth in the Cardinal section at the Wisconsin Pre-Nationals.

The coaches ranked the Zags number 26 in the country, after receiving votes in the last poll.

Washington State, which did not have an impressive outing in finishing tenth in the White section, dropped 12 spots in the national rankings to number 29.

The nation’s top five men’s teams in Division I are defending champion Northern Arizona, BYU, Wisconsin, Stanford, and Portland.

Other Pac-12 teams ranked in the top 30 include number 8 Colorado, #11 Oregon, and #12 UCLA.

In the women’s national Division I poll, Maurica Powell’s Husky squad held steady at number 16, after finishing fifth in the White section last Saturday.

The nation’s top five women’s teams are Colorado, Boise State, New Mexico, Oregon, and Arkansas.

The only other Pac-12 team ranked in the national top 30 is number 6 Stanford.

With conference championship meets upcoming on the final full weekend of October, the next edition of the USTFCCCA coaches’ poll will be released on October 30th.
