Washington's Talon Hull finishes second in Pac-12 men's cross country championship...

STANFORD, California—In perhaps one of the most competitive conference championships in recent memory, University of Washington sophomore Talon Hull (left/photo by Paul Merca) gave defending Pac-12 champion Grant Fisher of Stanford all he could handle before defending his crown over the last 20 meters of the men’s 8k race.

The pack at the front of the race started with as many as twenty athletes, with very few being dropped over the first three laps of the 4-lap, 2 kilometer Stanford Golf Course.

The real action took place over the last lap, as a group of eight were separated from the lead group, whittling the front pack to about a dozen.

In the last 300 meters, Hull gained a two-step lead over Fisher, who won two weeks ago at the Wisconsin Pre-Nationals.

However, Fisher reeled in Hull over the final 100 meters, to cross the line in a time of 23:10 (23:09.8) to Hull’s 23:11 (23:10.2).

Stanford’s Alex Ostberg and Alek Parsons were right behind Hull in 23:11 (23:10.8 for both), with Colorado’s Joe Klecker finishing fifth in 23:12, just ahead of Oregon’s Cooper Teare.

A trio of Washington prep standouts finished 7-8-9, as Washington State’s Chandler Teigen from Asotin HS was seventh in 23:13, the same time as Colorado’s John Dressel from Mt. Spokane, with Washington’s Tanner Anderson from North Central HS in Spokane ninth in the same time.

Such was the depth up front that 12th place was only seven seconds behind Fisher.

The Washington Huskies finished second with 62 points, as Stanford successfully defended its Pac-12 title with 44 points, placing three in the top 10.

Behind Hull and Anderson were Tibebu Proctor in 14th (23:23), Andy Snyder in 17th (23:28), and Fred Huxham in 20th (23:33).

Washington State finished fifth with a final team score of 123 points.

Behind Teigen were Nathan Wadhwani in 21st (23:34), Amir Ado in 28th (23:47), Colton Johnson in 34th (23:55), and Justin Janke in 36th (24:00).

In the women’s 6k race, Katie Rainsberger led the way for the 16th-ranked Huskies with her 11th place finish n 20:05.

Also scoring for Washington were Allie Schadler in 23rd (20:37), Emily Hamlin in 29th (20:48), Lilli Burdon in 31st (20:55), and Olivia O’Keeffe in 32nd (20:56), as the Dawgs finished fourth overall with 123 points.

Washington State finished eighth with 249 points, led by their All-American Vallery Korir, who was 39th overall with a time of 21:07. Following Korir was Zorana Grujic who recorded a time of 21:19 for a finish of 47th overall. Emma Jenkins followed with a time of 21:26 to finish 54th overall. Kaili Keefe soon crossed the finish line as well in 63rd place (21:38), with Janet Okeago in 21:40 rounding out the Cougar scorers in 65th.

Colorado’s Dani Jones successfully defended her Pac-12 title, winning in 19:25, just ahead of Oregon’s Jessica Hull, who ran 19:26.

Oregon won the team title with 32 points, just ahead of Colorado’s 48, and Stanford’s 81 points.
