Current Husky Sam Tanner & UW alum Izzi Batt-Doyle help re-open Tokyo Olympic qualifying period...
The 2021 Tokyo Olympics qualifying period re-opened Tuesday December 1st, with a current and former Washington Husky making moves after the standards.
In Whanganui, New Zealand, University of Washington sophomore Sam Tanner (photo by Paul Merca) ran 3:38.04 Tuesday night at the Cooks Garden 1500 meter run, to run the fastest time in the country this season.
Tanner, the national record holder in the mile and the 1500 in the under-19 & under-20 age categories, was led by 2016 Olympian Hamish Carson, who did the pacesetting.
The New Zealand Herald's writeup of the race is available here:

Besides a personal best for Tanner, the mark is the second fastest in University of Washington history, behind only Izaic Yorks' 3:37.74, set in 2016.
With no cross country season due to the COVID-19 global pandemic, Tanner is attending the UW remotely this quarter.
Meanwhile in Adelaide, Australia on Wednesday, Washington alum Izzi Batt-Doyle ran a personal best 15:26.48 for 5000 meters to win the Athletics South Australia state 5000 meter title, held in conjunction with the Adelaide Invitational meet.
Batt-Doyle, the 2019 Pac-12 10000 meter champion and NCAA third place finisher, went through 3000 meters in 9:21, and maintained 74 second laps over the next 1600, before closing in 71 seconds to become the fastest woman in South Australian history, with her final time of 15:26.48.
That mark is the fifth fastest time in Australia this season.
The Olympic standard in the women's 5000 is 15:10.00, while the men's 1500 standard is 3:35.00.
The results of the Athletics South Australia women's 5000m race is available here.
