Trio of Washingtonians entered in The Marathon Project Sunday...

CHANDLER, Arizona--A trio of athletes with Washington ties are entered in Sunday morning's running of The Marathon Project outside of the greater Phoenix area.

Washington alum Mike Sayenko (file photo by Paul Merca), Gonzaga alum Willie Milam, and Western Washington grad Courtney Olsen will be among the entries running six-plus laps of a flat 4.3 mile loop that encircles the Rawhide Western Town & Event Center.

A field of nearly 100 men and women received invitations to this unique marathon conceived by Hoka Northern Arizona Elite founder/coach Ben Rosario, agent Josh Cox & Big River Race Management's Matt Helbig.

With very few racing opportunities in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the point of the race is to give folks the chance to run the Olympic qualifying standard of 2:29:30 (women) and 2:11:30 (men). While the US team for the Olympics was selected in late February, there are several foreign athletes entered in the field, including Canadians Cam Levins and Natasha Wodak, and Mexico's Ursula Patricia Sanchez Garcia, who is two seconds short of the standard.

The race is offering a modest prize purse of $5000/$2000/$1000 for 1st-3rd, but sponsored athletes can use this race to potentially earn time bonuses.

Athletes who hit the Olympic qualifying standard can also use the mark for the 2022 world championships in Eugene, as the qualifying period in the marathon opened on November 30th.

USATF.tv ($) will offer live streaming coverage of the race beginning at 7am, pacific time, with a delayed 90 minute recap coverage on NBCSN at 4:30pm pacific. Washington State University hall of fame member Bernard Lagat is one of the analysts on the broadcast.
