With the end of 2022 just a few days away, World Athletics has ranked its top competitions of the year worldwide through its competition performance rankings.
The rankings are based on the methodology it uses for the individual event rankings: essentially results scores plus placing scores equals performance scores.
Placing scores are contingent on the quality of the meet as determined by World Athletics, with the World Outdoor Championships, Olympics, Diamond League, other World Athletics championship meets, and national championships the four highest ranked meets.
Meets get participation points based on an athlete's world ranking at the time the meet was conducted. In the case of the Lilac Grand Prix, that meet got bonus points because the 2019 world outdoor champion in the 800 meters, Donovan Brazier, competed in Spokane.
INDOOR COMPETITIONS
The Podium in Spokane led the way, as the Toyota USATF Indoor Championships was ranked by World Athletics as the number 3 indoor meet in the world, behind only the World Indoor Championships in Belgrade, and the Meeting Hauts-de-France Pas-de-Calais in Liévin, France.
The national championships finished with a competition score of 46023 points. The championships earned 43308 points, plus 2715 participation points.
The Pac-12 Invitational, hosted by the University of Washington at the Dempsey Indoor, was ranked number 45 with 40776 points, plus 160 participation points to give it a score of 40936 points, while the Husky Classic was ranked number 58 with 40372 plus 70 participation points to give it an overall score of 40442 points.
COMBINED EVENTS
The Podium was the site of the USA Indoor Championships heptathlon and pentathlon, and was the number 13 ranked multi-event competition in the world in 2022, earning 8819 points plus 330 participation points to give it a final score of 9149 points.
The WSU Invitational heptathlon and pentathlon at The Podium was ranked number 100 in 2022 with 7616 points. It didn't earn any bonus participation points.
SPECIAL COMPETITIONS
The Podium also scored in the special competitions category (specialty competition), as the Lilac Grand Prix distance meet was ranked number 20 in the world with an overall score of 9721 points, boosted by 250 participation points. The appearance of 2019 world champion at 800 meters Donavan Brazier accounted for 120 of those 250 participation points.
OUTDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Western Athletic Conference championship meet, hosted by Seattle University at Husky Track on the campus of the University of Washington, was ranked number 57 in the world with a competition score of 148372 points, plus 55 participation points to give the meet a final score of 148317 points.
You can access the World Athletics Competition Performance Rankings here. When you get to the rankings, you can click and scroll to the competition type drop-down menu to see the various categories.
The rankings of the various meets does go back several years on the World Athletics database (next to the competition type drop-down menu is another drop-down menu for the year you're looking for). With the increased emphasis on the world rankings since the 2019 season, it's our opinion that the meet rankings aren't relevant until the 2022 season when enough meets have been scored. That said, World Athletics has ranked the Diamond League and the various national championships, along with its portfolio of world championship meets for a number of years.
The 2023 indoor season gets underway on January 13th with the Cougar Classic at The Podium in Spokane, followed by the Spokane Indoor Challenge January 13-14th. The UW Indoor Preview gets the Dempsey Indoor season started on January 14th.
