SEATTLE--Washington's Jayden White (Paul Merca photo) and Lake Stevens HS graduate Taylor Roe of Oklahoma State highlighted action on the first day of the Husky Classic at the Dempsey Indoor on the campus of the University of Washington.
White threw a season best of 73-8.75 (22.47m) to win the weight throw in the second round to easily top the field.
Pending results of meets around the country, his throw puts him fifth on the NCAA Division I descending order list, moving him fifteen spots.
In the featured women's 3000, Roe bided her time before moving up over the last three laps of the race.
Roe chased down Arkansas' Lauren Gregory, with Utah's Simone Plourde in hot pursuit to win in 8:56.94. Pluorde was second in 8:57.12.
Kayley DeLay, the Washington grad transfer from Yale who has outdoor eligibility, finished fourth in 8:58.93, just in front of Gregory, who was fifth in 9:00.05.
In the featured men's 3000, Washington's Luke Houser finished fourth in a personal best 7:48.81, while Gonzaga's Wil Smith, fresh off becoming the first in school history to break 4 minutes in the mile last week, set his second straight school record, running 7:53.57 to finish tenth.
Oklahoma State's Fouad Messaoudi won in 7:41.63, the second fastest time in the collegiate ranks this season, pending results from other meets around the country this weekend.
The Husky Classic resumes Saturday at 9:15 am.
