BUDAPEST, Hungary--
Washington alums Lindsay Flanagan (Paul Merca photo) of Team USA and Izzi Batt-Doyle of Australia finished ninth and 43rd in the women's marathon through the streets of Budapest early Saturday morning to start the penultimate day of competition at the World Athletics Championships.

The 78 woman field began their racing through the streets of Budapest at Heroes' Square at 7 am with the temperature at 76 degrees by running a 2.2 kilometer loop.

The runners then embarked on four 10-k loops that passed through many of the city's major landmarks, including the Hungarian State Opera House, St. Stephen's Basilica, Buda Castle, the Danube River, and Széchenyi Chain Bridge, before finishing at Heroes' Square.

Flanagan, a 2014 Washington graduate and NCAA qualifier who finished 37th in her previous world championship appearance in London in 2017, started at the back of the lead group, while Batt-Doyle, a former Pac-12 10000m champ, was a bit more conservative through the first half of the race.
