Central's Johan Correa breaks own school record in the mile, but is outside the D2 provisional mark...


MOSCOW, Idaho--
In Thursday's preview of the Lauren McCluskey Memorial Open at the Kibbie Dome, we noted that Central Washington's Johan Correa (#616/Paul Merca photo) would be the one to watch.

Correa, competing in his first mile of the 2024 season delivered, finishing third in a competitive race behind the University of Idaho's Lorenz Hermann (4:07.82), and Tim Stevens (4:09.58), breaking his own school record of 4:16.95, chopping it down to 4:09.92.

Correa now is in striking distance of the NCAA D2 provisional mark of 4:09.80, which only nine runners have ducked under so far this season.

In light action Friday, Washington State's Zenah Cheptoo won the women's 3000 in a solo 9:32.41.  The Cougars' team of Maya McCabe, Janet Nijjar, Elena Willems & Neema Kimtai won the distance medley relay in 11:44.23.

WSU's Sarah Kovich was third in the pentathlon with a score of 3415 points, while Central Washington's Ellie DeGroot was seventh with 3052.

Caden Hottman of the Cougs won the men's weight throw with a best of 57-9 (17.62m). Teammate AJ McGloflin won the men's high jump at 6-9.75 (2.08m). 

Competition resumes Saturday morning with more of the men's heptathlon, including the 60-meter hurdles at 9:50 a.m. Qualifying for the women's 60-meter races begin at 11:10 a.m. to kick off Saturday's running events.

USA CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS SATURDAY IN VIRGINIA...

Seattle resident Allie Ostrander, and Gonzaga's Logan Law are in Richmond, Virginia for Saturday's USA Cross Country Championships at Pole Green Park with an opportunity to qualify for the World Cross Country Championships in Belgrade, Serbia on March 30th.

Ostrander, a former NCAA champion at Boise State, is looking to squeeze into one of the six spots for the world championship team in the senior women's 10k race, as is Law in the men's 8k U20 race.

The men's U20 8k race begins at 10:15 am, Pacific time, while the women's 10k goes 45 minutes later.


USATF.tv, which is part of the RunnerSpace.com network ($), will offer live streaming of the USA cross country championships.
